For those new to specimen fishing and those experienced should all look at
the way they handle large specimen fish from ensuring your end tackle,
rods reels, line, landing nets and after landing products all designed to
handle the fish in the water your are on, this might sound obvious but it
happens time and again where anglers hook a big that they are not ready
for and end up loosing it or worse still damaging or killing it! Blow we
have laid simple but essential notes on fish care and how to set your
stall out and keep what you catch safe! Correct Tackle for the job If you are gunning for fish from double figures or above then the minimum you will need is a carp reel, rod, 8lb plus line, safe semi-fixed rig, 42" landing net, quality unhooking mat. Lifting fish from the water: So you have hooked a specimen and guided successfully to the net, don't just in and lift it straight up and out of its home the water, many large fish are damaged by this, check that their fins are folded flat against their body or they could be broken! Unhooking Fish: Make sure you have pre-planned your trip, position your essentials ready for capturing a fish so you don't have to panic when you get a take! Vital to fish conservation is a quality unhooking mat, laid on a flat area of ground away from sharp objects like stones, flint, tree stumps and roots, specimen carp can be very lively when on the bank and if the should hop of the mat you don't want the first thing they land on to be a sharp object, although you should keep the fish on the mat at all times! Always wet the mat thoroughly before placing a fish on it, fish will loose al their slim which is their protection from bacteria in the lake otherwise. Never leave your unhooking mat in the hot sun always get a bucket of fresh lake water next to the unhooking mat to wet the mat prior to placing a fish on it. Make sure you have a pair of forceps at the ready should the hook be set deep. Never leave the fish on the mat unattended! If the fish is lively place a wet sack over it so only the lips are exposed, keep the fish out of the water to a bare minimum! Returning fish to the lake: Always carry a fish back to the lake in either a landing net or weigh sling, sling mat, never carry a fish back in your arms, if a fish flicks you may drop it, causing death or damage, when releasing a fish they will be tired support the fish in the water until revived then release, if a fish is simple released when it is tired they can die! |
